Autism Spectrum Disorder Series: Module 3: Social Development

To truly serve students on the Autism Spectrum, a vital part of their lives must be addressed: their social development. An integral part of human wellness and happiness, social development is essential to a full and satisfying life. But for individuals with ASD, this is truly an area of fear, avoidance, and isolation. In this last part of this series, understand the social development of a neurotypical child and the specific difficulties or gaps in that development faced by ASD students. Beyond identifying these challenges, she provides concrete strategies for incorporating social development and skill building into the classroom and even into the school environment at large. Finally, explore the hidden curriculum of social mores and expectations learned implicitly by neurotypical children and provides methods, activities, and resources to naturally incorporate social development into the classroom or other setting. For those who truly want to build a bridge of understanding and ease a potentially devastating sense of isolation, addressing children’s social development and social skills is a must.
