June Lucas Zillich, Ed.D., a Bilingual School Psychologist and administrator with 30 years’ experience, reveals the essential link between culture, language, and academic success for students. Dr. Zillich explains how the integration of neuroscience, culture, and linguistic practices can help break the achievement gap that exists for marginalized students. She provides teachers with information, specific examples of Cultural and Linguistically Response Practices and the Strength-based Ecological Approach and wraps these understandings in current mindfulness practices. Specifically, she addresses the value of attunement, the development of bonded, supportive relationships that affirm and validate students, their language, and their culture, shown to be integral to their success. Finally, Dr. Zillich provides a wide array of resources to help teachers develop the tools and understandings necessary for building equitable classrooms.
